Century of the Child: Growing by Design, 1900-2000 - From July 29th to November 5th, New York City’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will be hosting an exhibit featuring a large-scale overview of object design and ideas of the 20th century linked to the modernist preoccupation with children and childhood as a model for progressive design thinking.
Of course the exhibit is a must see for kids and parents but also for those who wish to know more about the development of toys, books, clothing, etc. and the link they have on yesterday’s, today’s and tomorrow’s youth.
In conjunction with the exhibition, many classic toys created by great thinkers and designers are now available through the MoMA store. The Bauhaus Spinning Top, the Froebel Yarn Balls, Erno Rubik’s Rubiks Cube and the Original Metal Slinky by Richard and Betty James are just some of the many influential toys of the 20th century currently available in store.
If that’s not enough, the new book “Century of the Child: Growing by Design, 1900-2000” by MoMA’s architecture and design curator Juliet Kinchin and the department’s curatorial assistant Aidan O’Connor encompasses the entire exhibit and much more.
