His life seems simple until he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family. Trough Ruby, Ivan remembers life in the wild and is able to see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.

Not only is “The One And Only Ivan” a tale of friendship, art and hope that is sure to capture the hearts of the entire family, it’s a story based on truth. Applegate’s book is Inspired by the real story of Ivan the gorilla, who spent 27-years living in a mall in Tacoma. Ivan really loved to paint, cared about other animals and became an important symbol for the animal liberation movement in the 90’s.
